Chapter 1: No Fear, Cavalier, Renegade and Steer Clear Ruth (07), Matt (08), and I went down to Chinatown for some Dim Sum at Chau Chow City, a restaurant that also features (supposedly) the worlds third largest shark fin in its lobby. The first time she crashed a bicycle in the mean streets of Boston, Ruth Miller was only a freshman. Now, granted, it was my mountain bike, which is way too large even for me, so its a bit difficult on city sidewalks. Still, she was doing pretty well until about halfway across the Harvard Bridge, when a strong breeze sent her swerving madly into an elderly gentleman, who apparently did about two backflips before getting back up, dusting himself off, and walking away from it relatively unscathed. Anyway, if you ever see this person coming at you on a bike, steer clear. Not just for your own sake, but for hers. Think of the children. Also, you shouldnt be driving in Boston, anyway. What Im getting at is that the trip down to Dim Sum was far more exciting than the actual eating of Dim Sum. Are you familiar with it? You sit down and they place a porcelain pot of crysanthemum tea upon your table. Youre not allowed to pour any tea for yourself unless you pour someone elses first, or Shannon Dong will kill you. Then you obtain your nourishment for the afternoon by flagging down one of the many carts of food careening through the aisles and pointing at the nicest-looking dumplings on them. Sometimes, if you have someone there who speaks Mandarin, you can actually figure out what youre supposed to be eating. In this case, we werent that lucky, but weve been to Dim Sum enough to know that the doughy pork buns are good and the beef tripe tastes just like a meaty fruit roll-up. The good news is that the plates of dumplings are small and cost about $2 each, so even though you win some and you lose some, you can always end up getting a diverse array of tastes. And, of cour se, if you find something not to your liking youre allowed to leap onto the table and shove it down someones throat. Thats what Shannon would do if she were there. In theory I should hate Dim Sum because 60% of the dishes contain shrimp, which makes me throw up a little in my mouth, but I sometimes get bizarre cravings for it. I think Im pregnant. Chapter 2: Short Skirt, Long Jacket The Garment District is my favorite clothing store and that is that. Its also a fifteen-minute walk from my dorm. Sometimes my life is strangely beautiful. Now, for all you wondering, you must know that its illegal to set off any fireworks in Massachusetts without a license. Think of the children. Its kind of annoying, but once you see the show on July 4th, amateur fireworks seem a little trivial anyway. But this blog is a time for rejoicing, and rejoice we shall, both in fireworks and in the world record largest codfish. I think lobster might be my least favorite food ever. Shellfish makes me wretch in general, as do dissection foods, as do mass quantities of clarified butter, and the meat doesnt even look that appetizing to begin with. Anyway, I got some fish and chips for dinner while everybody else had two or three lobsters. Then we ran around for twenty minutes looking for a parking meter, during which time we found a modifiedcrane game which replaced stuffed animals with live lobsters. I dont think anybody had ever actually won it, because the lobsters looked a little unwell and there didnt seem to be any mechanism for getting the lobsters out of the machine without, you know, having your hand pinched off or something. I observed people around campus, but I think one of the perfect examples of a spoiled child is Angelica Pickles from the popular Nickelodeon show Rugrats. Angelica showed characteristics that made her stand out as an antagonist. I never knew not every kid was presented with new clothes every day, or got to go to Toys-R-Us whenever they wanted or had to take educate classes once a week. I thought that was a normal everyday thing in the life of a kid. That was what kids my age did. (Davis 1) I think that receiving things and having a well off lifestyle does not mean that a person is spoiled. I think it is there sense of entitlement afterwards. Davis admitted that she was oblivious to other people and she thought that everyone lived the same way that she did. If a person feels like the reason that they receive these things is because they deserve them; that shows that is a characteristic of a brat. A brat thinks that they are the greatest gift to earth and nothing else matters as much as they do. Davis may have gotten things, but that doesn’t necessarily make her into a brat. Brattiness can continue on longer than in childhood if it is not stopped earlier. There are some people who continue to be brats, even into their college years. Students in college may be seen as spoiled or brats if they don’t have to work or they go home every weekend to have things like groceries bought or laundry done for them. I think this is overgeneralizing some of the habits that these students may do. I can see how this can look like they are just being lazy from the outside, but it could be that it is a way to save money by washing clothes together. This is especially true for people who live near campus. I was an example of people that did that. Since I had to go home every weekend at my college summer classes, I did not do laundry at school. Instead I would take it home and get it washed with everyone else’s, in an effort to save money. Any way that I could think of to save money was a plus, not just for me, but for my grandmother as well. My grandmother, who I lived with thought it was a good idea. It was cheaper for her to wash all of the clothes together, instead of having to half loads of clothing. I think that the whole idea of spoiled children being brats can sometimes lead to a lot of overgeneralization. This especially applies to people who may have more money than others. We assume that if someone has expensive things that they will be brats. I have seen a lot of rich people that can be very humble and a lot of people who don’t have as much money be as bratty as can be. A good example is a close friend of mine, Whittney Williamson. Whittney is rich. I think rich is even an understatement. She doesn’t even know how much money she has. Her father owns oil fields in Oklahoma and Texas. He also sells machinery. Whittney seems like she would get everything in the world, but that isn’t the case. I think Whittney was humble and very misunderstood. Because, she came to school in Camaros and Corvettes, other students assumed that she was going to be brat. I worked with her in Student Council, a club that makes decisions for the school and does community service, for three years. I have seen, just by working with her how hard she works. She is constantly being taught things from her father that will make her into a well off college student. She explained that she had to do the same things as most other normal kids and that she got this philosophy from her father who did not start out as an oil tycoon, but worked his way up. I have also seen a counter example in a people that may not be rich, but they were brats. I was in program called Upward Bound, while I was in high school. Upward Bound was created for at-risk teens that may not have come from the wealthiest of homes and they are usually first-generation college students. While I was in Upward Bound it was common to see people with nice things, but they had worked for them. They wore expensive clothes; they had all kinds of expensive technology like MacBook’s and iPads. A lot of them worked too and they would off-set the cost of a lot of their things. In the plot, Blanche is Stellas younger sister who has come to visit Stella and her husband Stanley in New Orleans. After their first meeting Stanley develops a strong dislike for Blanche and everything associated with her. Among the things Stanley dislikes about Blanche are her spoiled-girl manners and her indirect and quizzical way of conversing. Stanley also believes that Blanche has conned him and his wife out of the family mansion. In his opinion, she is a good-for-nothing leech that has attached itself to his household, and is just living off him. Blanches lifelong habit of avoiding unpleasant realities leads to her breakdown as seen in her irrational response to death, her dependency, and her inability to defend herself from Stanleys attacks. Blanches situation with her husband is the key to her later behavior. She married rather early at the age of sixteen to whom a boy she believed was a perfect gentleman. He was sensitive, understanding, and civilized much like herself coming from an aristocratic background. She was truly in love with Allen whom she considered perfect in every way. Unfortunately for her he was a homosexual. As she caught him one evening in their house with an older man, she said nothing, permitting her disbelief to build up inside her. Sometime later that evening, while the two of them were dancing, she told him what she had seen and how he disgusted her. Immediately, he ran off the dance floor and shot himself, with the gunshot forever staying in Blanches mind. After that day, Blanche believed that she was really at fault for his suicide. She became promiscuous, seeking a substitute men especially young boys, for her dead husband, thinking that she failed him sexually. Gradually her reputation as a whore built up and everyone in her home town knew about her. Even for military personnel at the near-by army base, Blanches house became out-of-bounds. Promiscuity though wasnt the only problem she had. Many of the aged family members died and the funeral costs had to be covered by Blanches modest salary. The deaths were long, disparaging and horrible on someone like Blanche. She was forced to mortgage the mansion, and soon the bank repossessed it. At school, where Blanche taught English, she was dismissed because of an incident she had with a seventeen-year-old student that reminded her of her late husband. Even the management of the hotel Blanche stayed in during her final days in Laurel, asked her to leave because of the all the different men that had been seeing there. All of this, cumulatively, weakened Blanche, turned her into an alcoholic, and lowered her mental stability bit-by-bit. Her husbands death affects her greatly and determines her behavior from then on. Having lost Allan, who meant so much to her, she is blinded by the light and from then on never lights anything stronger than a dim candle. This behavior is evident when she first comes to Stellas and puts a paper lantern over the light bulb. Towards the end, when the doctor comes for Blanche and she says she forgot something, Stanley hands her her paper lantern. Even Mitch notices that she cannot stand the pure light, and therefore refuses to go out with him during the daytime or to well lit places. Blanche cannot withstand his attacks. Before her, Stanleys household was exactly how he wanted it to be. When Blanche came around and drunk his liquor, bathed in his bathtub, and posed a threat to his marriage, he acted like a primitive animal that he was, going by the principle of the survival of the fittest. Blanche already weakened by her torturous past did not have much of a chance against him. From their first meeting when he realized she lied to him about drinking his liquor, he despised her. He attacked her fantasies about the rich boyfriend at a time when she was most emotionally unstable. He had fact over her word and forced her to convince herself that she did not part with Mitch in a friendly manner. Further, he went on asking her for the physical telegram to convince him that she did receive it. When Blanche was unable to provide it, he completely destroyed her fantasies, telling her how she was the worthless Queen of the Nile sitting, on her throne and swilling down his liquor. This wild rebuttal by Stanley she could not possibly take, just as she could not face a naked light bulb. Further when Stanley went on to rape her, he completely diminished her mental stability. It was not the actual rape that represents the causes for her following madness, but the fact that she was raped by a man who represented everything unacceptable to her. She couldnt handle being so closely exposed to something that she has averted and diluted all of her life reality, realism, and rape by a man who knew her, destroyed her, and in the end made her something of his. She could not possibly effectively refute against him in front of Stella. Blanches past and present actions behavior, in the end, even in Stellas eyes depicted her as an insane person. All of Blanches troubles with Stanley that in the end left her in a mental institution could have been avoided by her. Stanley and she would have gotten along better if she would have been frank with him during their first encounter. I will analyse the friendship between Romeo and Mercutio, and between Romeo and Benvolios. I will compare Rome and Benvolio’s friendship to Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship and decide which is better. Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship is filled with humour and is frivolous with care, but care isn’t shown emotional. Romeo and Benvolio’s friendship is filled more with emotion and care is shown more emotional than through humour. Shakespeare presents Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship as frivolous and light-hearted but caring. Shakespeare shows this through the dialogue when Mercutio says, â€Å"Nay gentle, Romeo, we must have you dance.† Mercutio is trying to cheer Romeo up to have fun and forget about Rosaline. Shakespeare uses the imperative â€Å"must† to suggest to the audience that there is control in the friendship as Mercutio wants Romeo back to himself because Mercutio thinks Romeo has lost his way and needs to be brought back to himself. The adjective â€Å"gentle† is used by Shakespeare to convey how fond Mercutio is of Romeo, but is said by Mercutio through humour showing the audience how light-hearted and frivolous Mercutio is. The frivolous and light-heartedness is one-sided in the friendsip teeling the audience that Romeo and Mercutio isn’t the same. The adjective â€Å"gentle† is also used to show the audience how fragile and easily hurt Romeo is which gives the audience an insight into Romeo’s character. This alsomakes the audience feel sorry for Romeo being so focused on love because he’s heart always gets broken and Mercutio’s support and care may cheer up the audience up. This is shown to the audience when Mercutio says,† Prick love for pricking , And you beat love down.† Mercutio is giving Romeo advice ,which is to fight back at love for giving him heartache ,which shows the  audience the care in their friendship and that Mercutio wants to see Romeo happy, again, showing the audience he cares. Shakespeare uses repetition of the word â€Å"love† to reinforce that Mercutio’s view of love is different to Romeo’s showing the differences in their friendship and that they aren’t the same as they have different personalities. The audience may feel that Mercutio genuinely cares for Romeo and wants him to be happy, even though they have different views on love, but they may feel it’s not the best friendship as Mercutio doesn’t offer Romeo the sensitivity he needs. Shakespeare presents Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship as caring in and witty and sarcastic way. This is shown to the audience by Shakespeare when Mercutio says,† you are a lover borrow cupid’s wings and soar with them above common bound.† Mercutio is trying to cheer Romeo up in a sarcastic way to try and make him laugh and show Mercutio wants him to enjoy himself, which shows the audience that he cares. Shakespeare uses the metaphor,† borrow cupi’s wings and soar with them above common bound.† The metaphor is advice to imply to the audience that Romeo is cupid in the situation as he falls in love easily and he needs to be free from love and fly away from it to be back to himself. The metaphor also is giving the audience an insight into his character, which is that he falls in love all the time telling us he is a romantic. Mercutio is being serious but trying to make it seem a joke to cheer Romeo up telling the audience that he does care for Romeo by being sarcastic in a funny and witty way, but meaning no harm. Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship is presented by Shakespeare as a loyal friendship. This is shown by Shakespear through the dialogue when Romeo says,†and fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!† This tells the audience that Romeo is loyal to Mercutio is loyal to Romeo. Shakespeare uses alliteration â€Å"fire-eyed fury† which used to reinforce how frustrated Romeo is and â€Å"fire-eyed fury† is used as a metaphor by Shakespeare to reinforce how angry  Romeo is. Puncuation is also used to show Romeo’s anger to the audience, â€Å"!†. The word â€Å"conduct† is used by Shakspeare to foreshadow the impact of Tybalt’s death, where Romeo killed Tybalt because Tybalt killed Mercutio when Mercutio was protecting Romeo, which shows the audience the loyality in Romeo and Mercutio’s friendship. This may make the audience feel that Shakespeare is foreshadowing that love wont be as easy and because Romeo is angry it may hint to the audience that it is something to do with his actions. Shakespeare presents Romeo and Benvolio’s friendship as a caring and reliable friendship. This is shown through the dialogue by Shakespeare when Benvolio says,† I’ll pay that doctrine or else die in debt.† Benvolio is the more emotional friend who you would rely on as he cares for Romeo’s sensitive side and his emotions. The use of the verb â€Å"die† is used by Shakespeare to tell the audience how much Benvolio cares and would do anything for Romeo as he loves unconditionally, as they are cousins. Although Mercutio did die for Romeo which tells the audience he equally cares but has a different way of showing his care for Romeo. Hyberbole is used by Shakespeare to show the audience that Benvolio, again, really cares for Romeo and would do anything for him showing how reliable Benvolio is showing he is the more reliable friend than Mercutio. This might make the audience feel that both Benvolio and Mercutio care, but Benvolio has a better way of showing it as he offers Romeo more support. I think that both friendships are good friendships to have, nut Romeo and Benvolio’s friendship was best because he was a more emotional friend and he cared more for Romeo’s emotions. Benvolio also shows the audience that he cares a lot for Romeo in a better way than Mercutio does and is more reliable than Mercutio. I think the audience feels that Mercutio doesn’t take Romeo’s feelings seriously sometimes even though he cares a lot but isn’t a friend you would rely on. The audience think Romeo and Mercutio’s is better because Benvolio is too serious and isn’t as humorous as Mercutio, but Benvolio is really just being mature and is doing what’s best for Romeo.

The way they have described their understanding of the cold war is Iron Curtain. US and USSR conflict. Here are some things they said about the Iron curtain. After World War 2 the Soviet Union created the Iron curtain. The time collapse of the Iron curtain was symbolized in 1989 by the opening of the Berlin wall on November 9th. In the presses of the Cold War the general policy of the west toward the communist states was to contain them with the hope of internal division, failure or evolution just may end their threat. The Soviet Union challenged the west by instituting a blockade of the western sectors of the Berlin; little did they know the United States could airlift supplies into the city until the blockade was withdrawn in 1948. All three of the people that I interview said the same thing about who was involved in the cold war it was the U.S. and the USSR. My husband also added that the USSR was in a conflict with the west for more than 40 years. That conflict was never open to warfare (hot war). This is because the existence of the nuclear weapons made the war mad. This is why the conflict stayed a cold war. My step mom added the only thing that held the allies together was the extreme need to destroy Hitler’s Nazis. In 1945 Hitler was defeated and the cold war was inevitable. The USSR was a communist dictatorship and the U.S. was the capitalist of democracy. Both the U.S. and the USSR thought they held the key to the future happiness of the human race. My aunt Julia said that with the result of the cold war the Soviet Union fell apart in the early 1990s. Most people say it was because of their system could not keep people happy because it did not give them the rights or material wealth they thought they would have. 1949 the countries on the side of the USA formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) oppose the USSR. 1949 the USSR set up the council for Mutual Economic Assistance to unite the communist ruled states. For my aunt Julia it had been more than 30 years since she had even thought about the cold war so answering the questions was kind of hard and for my step mom she had got her GED in the 10th grade so she could remember much.
